Methodology

The search was also limited to ‘human’ and ‘journal article’, resulting in a set of 745 articles. The data set was downloaded, cleaned and imported into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. This comprised the database. This database was then supplemented with select international articles. I performed an in-depth content analysis of this select sample of international journal articles, as well as of major medical journals’ comments, letters and editorials. The Science Citation Index was also employed. This tool is a multidisciplinary index to the journal literature of the sciences. It fully indexes 5,900 major journals across 150 scientific disciplines, while also including all cited references captured from indexed articles. A search of all articles published from 1975 to 2006 in the Science Citation Index with sildenafil in the title, abstract, or keywords, not limited by language or article type, resulted in 2500 articles. Using these articles, crosstabulations were created to indicate the 100 most common authors within the 500 most frequently cited articles on sildenafil, the 100 most cited articles, the 100 most common journal titles, and the top 34 countries publishing articles on the topic.
